How Low Can You Go?

It's hard to say exactly when and why some item of clothing becomes age-inappropriate. But you know it when you put it on, don't you? Sometimes I even look at something lying on my bed, pre-donning, and realize there's no way. So, fine. I get it, I give it away, I move on.

But miniskirts have, for some reason, spent years toeing that line for me. I would have said that on paper, they were long over, if for no other reason than they make it real hard to bend down as often as I have to. Still, they remain an active part of my summer wardrobe. Winter, too. So what to make of that?

Well first, they're actually real comfortable. Sometimes better than shorts. And they're a bit sexier than shorts as well, and make me feel a teeny bit dressed up, which I'm usually too hot to do in the summer.

I do think that every year I have to make more and more concessions as to what I wear with the miniskirts to make them acceptable. For example, in college I wore very short skirts with very tight tank tops. Not so much these days.

The skirt in this picture actually came from my mother (hmm...apple, tree?) and is quite a number of inches off my knee. I would normally see that as a problem, but I really wanted to wear it and because it's denim I thought I might still be able to pull it off. So I found a t-shirt I have that is, to say the least, blousy. And then over that I put one of those long cardigans that seem to go with everything. Finally, very flat sandals.

This is bordering on a uniform for me these days...minus the cardigan, now that summer has officially descended in the form of 90 degree days. But I think it works: hip, hot, and still carefully tip-toeing along that line of age-appropriate. What do you think?
