My Aching Ends

So, I noticed the other day that I was wearing a ponytail. No big deal. I have long hair, it's nice to have it out of my face, etc. But then I thought a bit more about it, tried to remember the last time I went without a ponytail for the entire day, and realized I am in the Daily Ponytail Rut.

I've been here before, for sure. Frequently enough, sadly, that I even know what it means - I'm in DESPERATE need of a haircut.

I think somewhere in the world there are people who get their hair cut on the recommended every-twelve-week schedule that your hairstylist mentions while shaking their head about the state of your ends. When I hear that, I always have an enjoyable internal guffaw. Every twelve weeks? It seems to take twelve weeks just to get an appointment that works for me, my babysitter, and my hair cutter. By the time I've recovered from the process of matching everyone's schedule, I'm ready for a break before starting it all again. And hey - it's expensive! And I'm cheap! Given all that, I'd say I get my hair cut every 7 - 9 months.

But that means I get the rut. My hair gets cut, looks good, gets longer, loses shape, starts to drag, gets pulled back, stays there. The Daily Ponytail Rut, as evidenced by a brief survey of the few photos I appeared in over the last year:

Bun, ponytails, ponytail. Boring, boring, and boring-er.

I do wish I was one of those people who was really creative with their hair, or had better hair. I know, grass is always greener, but my hair is an awkward middle ground between straight and curly, thin and thick. It is literally none of the above. It is thick-ish, but not thick. It is wavy, trending towards a mushroom-head limbo land. Someone asked me once if I had a perm, and I literally gaped at them. Do you think I would do this to myself? I yelled (but silently, in my head). It can't be straightened or blow-dried successfully, except by a professional. The warmer it is, the poufier it gets; the colder it is, the more static it attracts.

So, a ponytail it is. Or, you might argue, more regular haircuts.

Fair enough.

  1. Me too. Exact same scenario. Are we long lost sisters?

  2. Must be...cause neither of the people I've been told are my sisters seem to have this problem :)

And when are we getting you on here, Heide?!

  3. I agree... but buns and pony tails are sometimes a necessity with an eight-month-old grabby grabby who tears my face off and hair out every chance he gets!

Love the blog, by the way!

  4. So glad you came by, Lauren! Even with a 5 year old and 2 year old the ponytail is a stark necessity, I hate to say, though I do find over any given year I'm moving somewhere between 1) short hair, cut in frustration, 2) the growing-out-stage, and 3) the daily ponytail. Hard to find the perfect place, esp with the complicating factor of kids.
